The thesis template is preset with this numbering style. SFU Library does not require a specific citation style. Cumulative, or paper-based, theses must use the same general format as other submissions.

Owned by: Assistant for Theses. The digitisation of doctoral theses is a great boon to current doctoral candidates: reviewing recent examples of doctoral work in their institution is only a few clicks away. New candidates can appraise doctoral work done by former scholars in their department to get a feel for aspects such as chapter structure, page length, academic writing style, and referencing conventions: reading a thesis to write a thesis as Cally Guerin recently advised.

As a postgraduate learning adviser one of my regular weekly routines has been to check our digital repository to see which new doctoral theses have been uploaded. Although a few new doctoral theses are embargoed, there are usually six or seven new ones to scan through each week. Just over three years ago I started keeping an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of how many pages there were in each thesis and the number of chapters.

Once I got a sample of theses from I began looking for patterns in the data. This simple desk-top survey revealed that the average number of chapters was 7. Since outliers, the short thesis 67 pages in maths or long in architecturecould potentially skew the average, I checked for the median length which turned out to be pages. We agreed to carry on with the audit and decided that 1, doctoral theses, from each calendar year from towould form a robust sample size and allow for any changes in length and composition over time to be detected.

We created our own protocol to ensure consistency of coding. So our page count did not include the front sections using Roman numerals such as mandatory title page, abstract, table of contents, acknowledgements, preface, glossary etc. And we agreed that a page was a page was a page irrespective of font size, line spacing, and inclusion of tables, figures and illustrations.

If it had a page number it was a page. Most thesis tables of contents made it easy to discern the number of chapters: they were numbered in a conventional sequential format. In the sample of 1, theses only 23 had fewer than pages and a further 65 theses were more than pages in length. There were theses with five or fewer chapters two chapters was the simplest thesis structure found and with ten or more chapters 20 chapters was the most complex.

However, sincethe median number of pages for a STEM thesis is below pages and trending downwards towards pages in it was Non-STEM theses hovered between and pages from tobut over the last few years also appear to be trending slightly downwards median of pages in Over our year period the basic requirements for a PhD or named doctorate have remained the same.

The only changes have been since the potential to submit a PhD with a creative component and clarification of the use of publications in the thesis.

In addition, the average time to completion has dropped from over four years to 3. When I looked at the theses from and compared them to the theses from last year, there were slight differences. The average length in was pages with the median ; last year the average length was pages and the median In there were an average of 7. Our Dean of Graduate Studies, at Induction sessions, tells new candidates that the maximum word length is a limit not a target!

And she reminds them that there is no minimum word limit. I tell candidates that, irrespective of their thesis subject, if they work towards a thesis of six, seven, or eight chapters they are in good company. One of the most popular posts on the Thesis Whisperer is How to write words a day and not go bat shit crazy.

Last year a Twitter follower brought to my attention a post called How I went from writing words to 10, words a day by the fiction writer Rachel Aaron. I read the post with interest. Imagine if you could reliably write 10, words a day, how long would it take to finish your thesis… A week? How about a journal paper — a day? The Thesis Bootcamp concept is simple — put a whole lot of PhD students in a room for a whole weekend and set them the goal of writing 20, words each.

At every Thesis Bootcamp we have run, at least one student will achieve this goal, and many write many more words than they thought they would. Composing a Thesis requires you to do different types of writing. Perfectionist writers have a problem doing this, which is why we see so many perfectionists at our Bootcamps. At Bootcamp we teach our students to focus the generative writing energy to productive effect. The map is essentially a series of sub-headings which the students use as prompts for composing new text, or re-using existing text.

Thesis structure is strongly influenced by disciplinary precedent and the content of the Thesis itself. A history PhD it might follow a timeline from the past to the present; a science PhD might echo the order of the experiments that have been performed. Try the following technique:. You can change, add and move stuff around as you write.

In our Thesis Bootcamps we ask students to just pick a spot on this map and start writing as fast as they can, not as well as they can. Does this generate perfect thesis ready text?

Not necessarily, but many students say that the writing they produce at Bootcamp is clearer than the writing they did before it, when they are worrying over every word. I think the thesis map is a big part of this clarity because it keeps the focus tight. This organising technique works best for very late stage thesis students, but it can be a way of creating order at any time in your journey and working out what you need to find out or write more about.

If you are interested in some techniques and ideas for creating protective writing time, have a look at the following posts:.

Rachel Aaron did some deep analysis of her productive writing days and compared these to the occasional not-so-productive days. Days where she found it hard to muster words a day she was bored with what she was writing:.

This was a duh moment for me, but it also brought up a troubling new problem. This was my novel, after all. Unfortunately in Thesis World this is not always possible.A case of eating my own cooking if you will. The PLAN works best closer to completion, when you have absorbed a lot of information about your topic and have thought about it for awhile.

Now close that Facebook window and listen to Auntie Thesis Whisperer for a moment. The secret to writing at least words a day is to give yourself a limited time frame in which to do it.

If you give yourself the whole day to write, you will spend the whole day writing and, in the process, drive yourself bat shit crazy. His point was that you have to tackle it one wheel barrow load of shit at a time — if you stay in the stable too long, the stink will kill you.

How to write 10,000 words a day

This sounds counter intuitive, but trust me — it works. Most of us are in the best frame of mind for this after breakfast and before lunch — whatever time of the day that happens to be for you. So writing new stuff should be almost the first thing you do when you sit down to your desk.

A chunk can be anything up to two pages long — the text between each subheading if you like. Once you have planted the seed, just start adding on words around and over it — this builds a chunk. This advice also comes from Becker, who points out that thinking happens during writing.

The surest way to slow the process is to worry too much about whether your thinking is any good. So give yourself permission to write badly. When you need a rest, review and fiddle with the text — maybe plant a new seed — then move on to another burst. Carving off the excess crap in the editing process will reveal the words of beautiful substantive text you are after. Go and have a coffee with a friend, walk the dog, watch some TV — whatever takes you away from your desk for a couple of hours.

Then come back — maybe after dinner — and start sifting through, massaging and editing. Be strategic about this editing — some parts will be easier than others. This gives you a sense of achievement which is important for morale. When I present this method in seminars it invariably horrifies those people who like to write line by perfect line. Agreed with my supervisors today that I should aim on putting a first complete draft together over the next month or two or three.

I am about to send this to Someone I Know who is struggling with his line-by-perfect-line approach. It is such excellent, pragmatic advice. Chunking is what I do too — for the first draft, anyway. As a line by perfect line junkie…in the words of Freddy Mercury….

LEADERSHIP LAB: The Craft of Writing Effectively

I want to break free…. Thesiswhisperer you have made my day. The trick for me is to Do.I was almost certain that there was no way that I could graduate that year, or ever for that matter. I started several dead-end projects, and most of my data was inconsistent and did not support any of my hypotheses. The irony was that I actually created this life for myself because I thought that getting a PhD degree was the road to a better life and a career that I would be passionate about.

As I had expected, I could only use a very small portion of the data I had collected up to that point in my thesis. My supervisor assigned me a new project, and I had to learn how to use three new instruments that I had no prior experience with. In order to meet this ambitious deadline I decided to extend my hour days to hour days and learn the methods I needed for the new project.

After 5 months, I was finally able to generate some reproducible data with my new experimental setup. I still had to run hundreds of samples through my system, but I finally had hope that I might be able to graduate that semester. The problem was the thesis deadline was only 3 months away and I had no idea where to start.

Eventually, just as I was burning out and spinning into a dark cycle of depression, anxiety, and hopelessness, I finished my thesis. Over the next few years after finishing my thesis, I started studying the process and creating a more effective system for writing a thesis.

This may seem obvious, but so many graduate students fail to define their overall hypothesis before beginning their thesis.

Some PhD students spent 8 or 9 years full-time in graduate school working on many small projects because no one project was viable enough for an entire thesis. The only reason their thesis committees let these students graduate is because the students had been in school for so long.

Your question will probably evolve over time, but the more clarity you have about the purpose of your thesis, the more efficient your research will be.

How many chapters and pages are there in a doctoral thesis?

The details of each stage will vary slightly depending on your field, but for most thesis writers the stages are, first, idea collection, second, editing and data analysis, and third, polishing.

Perfectionists like me will particularly benefit from dividing their writing into discrete stages. The purpose of the first stage of writing is to get as many ideas as possible on paper, without judging, editing or formatting your document.

By allowing yourself to collect your ideas without criticism, you can spark your creativity and overcome the fear of imperfection that may be holding you back from starting to write your thesis. It is during the second stage, editing and data analysis phase, that you need to be rigorous with your writing and editing. At the end of the second phase your goal is to produce a manuscript that has a clear structure and a logical flow of arguments so that you can submit it to your supervisor for review.

In the final polishing phase, you need address the feedback from your committee and fill in any gaps in the logic. Some advisors are either too busy to mentor you properly or are micro-managers who want daily updates on your progress.

thesis pages per day

The role of your advisor is to mentor you so you learn how to be an independent researcher, not to hold your hand for the rest of your life.

Your advisor may or may not be a good mentor, but you need to be in agreement regarding the direction of your research because you need their approval to graduate. If you have disagreements with your advisor, or you have a dead-end project, it may take several meetings to determine the overall direction of your thesis. The most effective way to meet with your advisor is to schedule meetings far in advance and come to every meeting with a clear agenda.

If your advisor is a difficult person, continue to be proactive about planning meetings and developing solutions to your problems. Type sentence fragments. Type anything.
